frequently asked questions

Does the rehydrated sour cream powder taste like REAL sour cream?

Speaking as someone who puts sour cream on anything and everything possible (I love it!), the taste is close to real sour cream when eaten on its own, but it's not perfect. When added to a dish, such as our Tortilla Soup or Chili, it adds a wonderful sour cream flavor to the dish and I highly recommend it!
How much does each packet make?

A 2 ounce packet of sour cream is a little over a 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of sour cream powder. When water is added this shrinks down to about 1/8 cup of creamy sour cream.

How do I use the sour cream powder? What is the texture that it should reach? Is it close to a real sour cream?

To use the sour cream powder you simply add cold water, mix and it's done! It does have a similar consistency to real sour cream, but if you would like it thicker or thinner you simply add more or less water.

Excellent product. Mixed stiff makes a respectable cream cheese. Spread it on a graham cracker and top with your favorite fruit preserves and you have a tasty mock cheese cake.

This stuff's good. The only other place I've ever bought it was Alpine Aire, and their customer service is abysmal and their shipping comes by very slow, lame tortoise. I especially like it mixed into potato flakes for that extra-creamy touch. Buy some chives and/or leeks in bulk, add cheddar cheese powder (or some sliced/grated shelf-stable cheese), some real bacon crumbles, call it an unbaked potato, and dig in! If you mix the sour cream powder in a minimum of water, it makes a decent bagel spread. Add some celery/carrot/tomato bits, and some bell pepper pieces, all reconstituted, of course, and you'll have a decent Garden Vegetable spread. Yum!
