Baking Kit

Enjoy cupcakes, brownies or piping hot muffins in the backcountry with our baking kit!  This set can be paired with your own recipe or used to steam-bake our Molten Chocolate Lava Cakes!

To steam-bake: (1) Place the steamer base inside of your pot and add just enough water to cover the base; (2) Add your batter to the silicone baking cups and sit them on top of the steamer base; (3) Heat your water to a boil, add the lid and reduce to a simmer (timing depends on the batter); (4) Turn off heat, let cakes rest for 5 minutes and enjoy!

frequently asked questions

What kind of mixes do you use to bake?

We're not currently selling any mixes at this time, but a traditional cake or muffin mix actually works great! Simply pour the mix into the silicone baking cups, place the cups on top of the steamer base, add half an inch of water, place a lid on top and steam your cupcakes/muffins for about 5-10 minutes (depending on your dessert). Ta-da! You've got delicious cupcakes in the backcountry!
What size pot is needed to work with this? What is the diameter of the steaming tray? Diameter and height of the cups?

The steaming base is 6" in diameter, so I would recommend a pot that is between 6-8". The cups are 2.5" in diameter and 1.25" tall. You will need a lid to hold in the steam, but aluminum foil works great as well if space and weight are a concern.

This set up worked really well! I made my friend the Chocolate Molten Cakes for her birthday in camp and they were a hit. One word of advice...if you are in a very mousey area (eg. the Grand Canyon), then make sure to stow the silicone muffin cups in a rat sack even if they haven't been used yet. Apparently mice enjoy the texture of the silicone =)

I tried it at home with a commercial muffin mix. I was impressed. I was expecting something sorta mushy like a dumpling. Instead, the muffin was baked nicely and was done very quickly.
