This one got rave reviews from our taste testers — one guy said, “Tastes like real food!” I can personally say it’s one of the best prepackaged trail meals I’ve tried. With roasted chicken and dumplings in a thick, savory gravy, it reminded me of something Grandma might make.

— BSA Boys' Life Magazine, October 2015

Craving comfort food on a chilly evening? Dig into this prep-in-the-bag meal, loaded with melt-in-your-mouth dumplings and crunchy cornbread croutons. The broth blends smoky mushrooms with sweet carrots and peas, and it's chockablock with bits of tender chicken.

frequently asked questions

Why is a Cook–in–Cozy™ recommended?

We recommend that all of our hot meals spend time "steep-cooking" while snuggled in a Cook-in-Cozy. We find this method promotes a more consistent temperature and steady cook time for Cook-in-Bag preparation; and results in a better serving temperature for your meal. When not in use, our Cook-in-Cozy folds away nicely in your pack for storage and weighs in at only 1.4oz.

It will fill you up but you will want to add your spice of choice as it is very bland. Wish I would have had some pepper and salt to add to this because it is a hearty meal. Would buy again but only if I'm packing in some spices with me.

So this meal was my first somewhat disappointing experience from packit. The broth and the veggies were amazing, however the meat never fully rehydrated and the dumplings just dissolved. Also there was a strange bitterness that I couldn't put my finger on. It also seems the recipe may have changed since my purchase as the calories are different now so my quibbles may have been fixed, but unfortunately I have 3 more of these...

I took the Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings with me on a 4-day backpacking & climbing trip to Como Lake in Colorado along with many other Packit Gourmet meals. First off all, I want to let the readers know that I rated ALL the other meals 5 forks but I just can’t with this one. I don’t really know what it was that made this almost unpalatable for me. My partner was jealous of all my other Packit meals, but just like me, he thought is was subpar. It was bland and some of the dumplings had a raw doughy consistency. I’m giving it 3 forks because it was edible just not enjoyable. I will definitely be purchasing all the other Packit meals again, but this is a no go.

I like to try trail meals at home before using them on the trail so I insure that the meal will be good. This meal was very tasty, seasoned just right and the portion size was perfect. What would you suggest if I wanted a thicker sauce; less water or longer steeping time ?

This one got rave reviews from our taste testers — one guy said, “Tastes like real food!” I can personally say it’s one of the best prepackaged trail meals I’ve tried. With roasted chicken and dumplings in a thick, savory gravy, it reminded me of something Grandma might make.

Been one of my favorite dinners on trail and always see jealousy of my trail mates at camp. Great flavor and filling.
