What I love about this meal so much other than the chili is just fantastic, is that it comes with some toppings, so you get some corn chips, some sprinkle cheese and some TX Pete Hot Sauce.

It really is nice just to have so much flavor on trail, and then to be able to add those toppings and stuff … I think this one is the closest meal I’ve had to like a real meal in town, but while backpacking.

— Homemade Wanderlust: My 5 Favorite Backpacking Meals, YouTube Video, January 2019

The bane of some camping food: lack of texture. The bane of most: lack of flavor. This stewy meal ups the ante on both. The base is a meaty, tomato-based broth packed with as much flavor as the Lone Star State itself. But the proverbial icing on the cake? Included toppings of crushed Frito-style corn chips, shredded cheese and a packet of Texas Pete Hot Sauce that will warm your insides on a cold night.

frequently asked questions

What is Gluten Conscious?

Gluten Conscious is a term we use to describe a product that is prepared with gluten free ingredients; however, it is not prepared in a gluten-free environment. While we are careful to avoid cross-contamination, it is possible that trace amounts of gluten may be present due to the use of gluten in our facility.
Why is a Cook–in–Cozy™ recommended?

We recommend that all of our hot meals spend time "steep-cooking" while snuggled in a Cook-in-Cozy. We find this method promotes a more consistent temperature and steady cook time for Cook-in-Bag preparation; and results in a better serving temperature for your meal. When not in use, our Cook-in-Cozy folds away nicely in your pack for storage and weighs in at only 1.4oz.

I made it at home. It exceeded expectations. Great flavor, spiciness (customizable) and texture. It rehydrated very well. The crumbled fritos and cheese made it extra special. I'm packing one to take up to the Eastern Sierras this week. I'll probably pack this on every trip.

This is my favorite meal so far from PG and that says a lot because I have had a few. It would be great on its on but the additions of the hot sauce packet and corn chips and cheese made it perfect. I took it up to Grayson Highlands this past weekend and with 40 degree evening temperatures it warmed me up and hit the spot.

I got this chili as a Christmas gift. I ate it this weekend on a camping trip and it was great! In fact, it was the best add water and eat-in-a bag meal that I have ever purchased. Nothing was crunchy. I was sure to get the water boiling with my MSR Pocket Rocket and to put my meal in the cozy. I am sold on the cozy. My meal was delicious and more than enough for one person. Two people with average appetites could eat a packet with a side dish. Please offer more meals that are sodium conscious. Even if I hike, sweat, and burn calories, I still have to watch my sodium intake. Some of your meals have just too much sodium for me. Could you make some more low sodium choices?

WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW. I love cooking in and out of camp and started experimenting with dehydrated ingredients to make some of my favorites at camp without all the refrigeration. That's how I found this site. Other backpacking meals leave a lot to be desired. This CHILE is AMAZING! I can't wait to share it with my scouts. I have a canoe trip next week, and if I could get more for them I would. Can't wait to try the rest.

We've been backpacking for many years and have seen so-called "trail food" evolve from stuff that was largely inedible (I still recall putting out the remains of one dinner which even the Ravens refused to eat! We had to bury it.) too real, easy-to-prep gourmet food, and Packit Gourmet is THE place to get it. For us meals like Texas State Fair Chili and several others are exceptional and more than enough for two trail-hungry eaters. I would offer three pieces of advice (assuming they make it past the "editors!"): 1. Always try your meals at home, prepping them according to the directions. This will let you know if the portions are right for you. 2. Save weight on the trail (if you'll be pot-cooking rather than using the packaging) by eliminating as much of the packaging as possible. 3. Items like Texas State Fair Chili and others containing cheese and chips really are best consumed within three months of production. Final unsolicited advice: If you thought you could make 10 miles and you're "finished" after 8, set up camp right there and enjoy yourself. Hiking's supposed to be fun, not a job!

Totally lives up to the hype. Ranks up there with some of the tastiest chili I've had and it's trail ready! Stop thinking about it and buy some already.

Tried several backpacking chilis and most went into the trash. Hands down the best by far. We now understand the hype and reviews. First saw on YouTube "Husband Wife Outdoorlife". They were right!
