Texas State Fair Chili

ranch chili with beef, red beans & smoked peppers, corn chips bits & cheddar-jack cheese

Chili is the classic cookin' under the stars dish — and our Texas State Fair version takes it over the top!

This hearty chili is chock full of lean ground beef, red & kidney beans, ripe red tomatoes, onions and peppers — served up with corn chip bits and cheddar-jack cheese. Add a complimentary splash of Texas Pete hot sauce if you like your chili spicy!

It ranks supreme as the fan favorite and most popular meal!

UPDATE for long-time buyers of our Texas State Fair Chili - the corn chips & cheese are now mixed directly into our chili (rather than packaged separately) resulting in less micro-trash at camp!

What I love about this meal so much other than the chili is just fantastic, is that it comes with some toppings, so you get some corn chips, some sprinkle cheese and some TX Pete Hot Sauce.

It really is nice just to have so much flavor on trail, and then to be able to add those toppings and stuff … I think this one is the closest meal I’ve had to like a real meal in town, but while backpacking.

— Homemade Wanderlust: My 5 Favorite Backpacking Meals, YouTube Video, January 2019

The bane of some camping food: lack of texture. The bane of most: lack of flavor. This stewy meal ups the ante on both. The base is a meaty, tomato-based broth packed with as much flavor as the Lone Star State itself. But the proverbial icing on the cake? Included toppings of crushed Frito-style corn chips, shredded cheese and a packet of Texas Pete Hot Sauce that will warm your insides on a cold night.

frequently asked questions

What is Gluten Conscious?

Gluten Conscious is a term we use to describe a product that is prepared with gluten free ingredients; however, it is not prepared in a gluten-free environment. While we are careful to avoid cross-contamination, it is possible that trace amounts of gluten may be present due to the use of gluten in our facility.
Why is a Cook–in–Cozy™ recommended?

We recommend that all of our hot meals spend time "steep-cooking" while snuggled in a Cook-in-Cozy. We find this method promotes a more consistent temperature and steady cook time for Cook-in-Bag preparation; and results in a better serving temperature for your meal. When not in use, our Cook-in-Cozy folds away nicely in your pack for storage and weighs in at only 1.4oz.

WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW. I love cooking in and out of camp and started experimenting with dehydrated ingredients to make some of my favorites at camp without all the refrigeration. That's how I found this site. Other backpacking meals leave a lot to be desired. This CHILE is AMAZING! I can't wait to share it with my scouts. I have a canoe trip next week, and if I could get more for them I would. Can't wait to try the rest.

We've been backpacking for many years and have seen so-called "trail food" evolve from stuff that was largely inedible (I still recall putting out the remains of one dinner which even the Ravens refused to eat! We had to bury it.) too real, easy-to-prep gourmet food, and Packit Gourmet is THE place to get it. For us meals like Texas State Fair Chili and several others are exceptional and more than enough for two trail-hungry eaters. I would offer three pieces of advice (assuming they make it past the "editors!"): 1. Always try your meals at home, prepping them according to the directions. This will let you know if the portions are right for you. 2. Save weight on the trail (if you'll be pot-cooking rather than using the packaging) by eliminating as much of the packaging as possible. 3. Items like Texas State Fair Chili and others containing cheese and chips really are best consumed within three months of production. Final unsolicited advice: If you thought you could make 10 miles and you're "finished" after 8, set up camp right there and enjoy yourself. Hiking's supposed to be fun, not a job!

I dont know how you guys do it but, keep doing it! I have been loyal to packit gourmet over the years and recently did a 40 mile hike on the A.T. and a few of my buddies got to experience the awesomeness of the one and only chili. I ran out of chili on the trail feeding my buddies. I turned all of them over to packit gourmet. You now have more loyal hikers. Thank you so much for the exceptional food.

Absolutely delicious. Very filling. Ate this while sitting deep in the backcountry with temps of 18. Warmed me right up.
